So this month isn’t going to follow the traditional format. Its kinda been a busy month. For starters I got married! There were times in life where I never thought it would happen, and I’m glad we finally did it. Doing a close destination wedding was perfect. It allowed us a few days to soak it all in, and we didn’t feel like everything was all shoved into one day. Lake Tahoe was gorgeous and things went off without a hitch, thanks in part to a ton of work put in by my best man and groomsmen. They truly were the behind the scenes people that made it all happen.
We got home from Tahoe and we just kinda chilled for a few days to decompress. Ended up taking the boat out a couple days and had some great mornings wakeboarding. I was even getting some small jumps and tricks. With reality setting in that I had my first Tri in 4 weeks I started to think about getting serious about cram training. This is like cramming for a college exam, only you cant cram 4 months of exercise into 4 weeks. I started out with a few easy runs, and even got in my first open water swim. Then the laundry room happened.
Our washer and dryer blew up on us and we had to buy a new set. Well we couldn’t put a couple shiny new appliances into that old dingy room, so we tore it out and started afresh. After a week of work we had a pretty new laundry room. However it looked sooooooo good, we had to do our kitchen too before our reception at home. So we started in on that. About this time the universes had other plans.
I woke up early on a Sunday morning ready to hit Lake Tapps with my buddies. The sun was shining, the new wife was sound asleep and I was free for 10 hours. Everything was right in the world, till I dropped my bagel cream cheese side down. With my arms full of towels/sweatshirts/coffee I squatted for my downed bagel. This is where I dumped my coffee all over myself as I retrieved my bagel. As I leaped up from the scalding liquid, I dropped my new DSLR camera out of my other hand. The morning had been going so well….
I knew at this point I should have crawled back into bed, but the lake was calling. I threw the stuff in the truck, slightly frustrated, and hopped into the boat to do a final check of the gear (ie making sure we had enough beer to make it to 11am). As I stepped off the trailer and onto my driveway I felt something crunch under my foot. Or was that my foot?
OWIE!!!! That was my foot. Ok, probably just a sprained ankle like the other 100,000,000 times I’ve done that. I’ll just walk it off and hit the board a bit later. Needless to say I didn’t board that day, and after attending a cousins wedding, the wife drug me to urgent care.
So now I have a dancers fracture in my right foot, with a prognosis of 6-8 weeks in a cast, with possible surgery on it (I’ll find out tomorrow if that happens). This basically puts the kibosh on my tri, and any training for the foreseeable future. My plans for Ironman 2015 are in serious jeopardy.
Probably more depressing than that is, how useless I feel right now. With my foot out of action (zero weight bearing) I basically scoot around on a razor like scooter. With the kitchen remodel in full swing I have to sit and watch as Carissa and my family takes on a lot of the tasks I should be doing. Add to that we just got our professional wedding photos back. I’ve never considered myself photogenic, add to that I’m super self-critical, and there is a recipe for disaster. I hate them. I look terrible in most of them, and in general feel like a failure. Not only to myself but to my new wife and family too. I had almost two years to get my weight/health in check and on this day, I failed all of them. Add to that my foot and everything else thats going on, I’m in a pretty low spot right about now.
I could use some good news right about now. With me being out of action for the time being, this blog may dry up for a bit. However I promise that once I start physical therapy I’ll start updating things again with me getting back on course.
Anyway, how’d your August shape up? Hopefully better than mine!
